Healthy, handsome, in his twenties, with a good family background, on a firm career path as publicist for a prestigious art gallery. Unlike the damaged, sometimes desperate, often brilliant heroes of the Murder Squad who have taken their turns in French’s clarifying spotlight, Toby has everything going for him. The big problem for me was the novel’s narrator-protagonist, Toby Hennessey. It’s definitely not the fault of reader Nugent, whose performance is impressive throughout. Unfortunately, my disappointment increased with every chapter of this long, talky audio. The fact that French’s new novel is a one-off tends to lower the anticipation level, indicating that we won’t be meeting the always intriguing members of the Dublin Murder Squad who have made her previous books so engaging. ![]()
